I can neither pair or unpaid my apple remote with my apple tv.

I have replaced the battery, I have held the right button with then menu for six seconds, I have unplugged the apple tv and replugged it back in. When I hit buttons on the remote the light on the apple tv blinks three times meaning that it does not recognize the remote but there is no other remote it could pair with. Please help.
