Q: None of my iDevices can read my iTunes library after an hour of availibility. When I first start iTunes I can read the library, but after about 30 minutes my iPad's and iPhones can no longer access the library. I see it in the shared list, but no access.

None of my iDevices can read my iTunes library after about 30 minutes. My iDevices lose connection to my library and  I have to do one of the three following things in iTunes to regain connectivity: 1. Restart iTunes 2: Stop / Start Home Services 3: Start playing a song.

I'ts as if iTunes goes into a background or sleep mode. During the loss of connectivity my iDevices show that there's a library shared, but I cannot connect to it.

Thinking the port test could be affecting my results, I let mine go without the port test and it got up to 236 connections, but 0 were in the CLOSE_WAIT state.  I tried to use my AppleTV and it was a no go.  Once I turned the port test on, the CLOSE_WAITs increased to 5, iTunes restarted and I was good to go again.

Unfortunately, I don't think the appletv update is responsible for your guys' current success.

Davids8477, aut0maticdan, Thread's really being read thanks to you guys.

2 things to ask. Have we been able to determine if it's just affecting ATV1, 2, or 3. Or any combination thereof.

I have ATV2 & 3 in my setup and I am still affected.

Also I notice my little activity light poping on and off on my ATV3 after putting it to sleep, but this doesn't happen on my ATV2's.

So I'm wondering if this larger issue isn't specific to a particular ATV?? Irregardless of the firmware version.

Well I'd like to appear like I know what I'm doing, but in reality I've just tried to isolate the cause.

Right now - and for several days - everything has worked as it's supposed to - and I really dont know what has changed.

I have 2 ATV2s and 1 ATV3 - all with latest software.  The computers are also running latest OSX.

I do not see the flashing light you describe on my ATV3.

    Not much help - sorry

    Hey Silver,

I have just an AppleTV 3, Mac Air and a few iPads connecting to my itunes on a mac mini.  The latter 2 connect very seldom.  My ATV has always done the regular wake ups where you see the light come on for a few.  I don't think that is a problem.

I thought all the stars were aligning today with the macbook pro announcement.  My connections were at zero since last night!

Yesterday morning, I did a restore of the apple TV and rebooted the mac mini.   I also turned off the port test in my script so it didn't interfere with HS at all.  I was relying purely on checking netstat which is totally non-intrusive.  For a while things looked ok, but then ultimately I had a restart later in the evening because I went over 100 connections to HS.

It stayed at 0 since then, but when I just got home, I turned on the appletv to find it did not save my HS credentials.  I logged in and found that my connection to HS was hanging with ZERO connections.  Really strange.  So I turned my script back on with the test.  Apparently it doesn't need to get over 100 connections for the HS to break and it may not even require an AppleTV connecting to iTunes.  It is just one of multiple scenarios.

I'm back to running my script with port checking and netstat checking for CLOSE_WAIT connections.

I didn't hear anything about iTunes updates today @WWDC, but that usually just comes with the new iOS and isn't a very big deal.

Any updated their Itunes to the new release?

    Did it ifx/break anything?

As my sharing seems to be working right now I dont want to screw it up.

I'm installing right now.  I was still having the issue with a few restarts overnight and an increasing number of connections, so I make a good guinea pig.  I'll let you know how it goes.  There is no specific mention of our issue:

    What's New in iTunes 10.6.3

iTunes 10.6.3 includes support for OS X Mountain Lion and addresses a number of important issues:

    • Addresses a problem where iTunes may become unresponsive when syncing an iPad (1st generation) that contains an iBooks textbook

    • Fixes a problem where photos synced to a device may appear in an unexpected order

    • Resolves an issue where iTunes may unexpectedly delete playlists created on a device

    • Fixes issues where iTunes may unexpectedly delete apps on a device

    • Improves overall performance and reliability

didn't seem to resolve issue on my end.

I noticed when doing  a netstat -b, that I get continual "TIME_WAIT"'s to port 3689 - Itunes port,  with each ATV port request increasing by 1 on my ATV3. but nothing on the two ATV2's.

So my ATV3 does two things the ATV2's do not while in sleep mode

    1. Continual (every 5 sec's) port requests to iTunes port 3689 showing "TIME_WAIT" (and occasionally "ESTABLISHED" when streaming a movie)

    2. Activity light blinks on and off seemingly randomly

Well I installed the latest Itunes on all machines.

Now my "number" jumped to 10 with one connection.

Disconnected that connection when down to 7

Added back 2 connections (computers) and it went to 8

Added ATV - went to 11

Disconnected ATV - went to 8

Add all 3 ATVs and 2 computers - went to 11

I'll keep an eye on it

Yes I see that.  I was looking for more detail - like Davids Laptop etc.

Actually it only shows One user connected - maybe its looking at teh Apple ID's and since my systems all use my ID it counts as one.

Currently I have 2 computers, i Iphone and 1 ATV using the shared library and it only shows 1 user as connected
