How to copy a movie from DVD to Mac?

Ok, I have a DVD and I want to "import" the movie (I don´t know if it´s the correct word) so I can watch it at any time and maybe copy that movie to my external HDD

MacBook Pro (13-inch Early 2011), Mac OS X (10.6.8)

If it's a commercial DVD those are copy protected and you cannot legally copy it (and we can't even discuss it on this web site). Yes, that applies even to DVDs you have fairly purchased.

If it's a family DVD you can just copy the files to the computer and open it with a player such as VLC which can also play DVDs format.
