I cannot insert CD or DVD into iMac 27"

Two days ago I listened to an audio CD. It played and ejected fine, but now I cannot insert a disk. I have restarted and also unplugged and restarted, but no luck. Disk utility shows the drive, but says it is waiting for me to insert a disk which I can't do. (27" Intel iMac, i3 proc, ident: iMac11,3, Sys: 10.6.8)

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

How far are you inserting it before expecting it to grab? I know in mine i have to nearly fully insert the disc before the drive will grab on and pull it the rest of the way in. They seem to vary in this, some grab it earlier than others.

If it will not grab it at all and you are still under warranty or Applecare, I am sure that if you take it to an apple store they will be easily willing to replace the drive for you though it may take at least overnight for that to happen.

If it is hitting something while only 1/2 way into the drive, I would likely guess there is a hardware malfunction with the player, and unfortunately, a visit to the Apple Store may be your best bet. I am unaware of any way to re-set a drive such that if it is permanently engaged in "Disc-In" position, while not reporting that to the OS, without Apple support.

1. Go into Spotlight from the top of your MacBook on the menue bar.

2. And search for "CDs & DVDs" (It's also in the System Preferences)

Click on it and a small CDs & DVDs window will pop up with options of what happens when you insert a disk into the drive

3. By then, try inserting a disk in (while that window is open. This kinda wakes up your drive to accept the disk). It should accept it.

4. If nothing happens, then manually open the program that should be opening when you insert the disk or go to Finder (Eg. if it's an audio disk, then open iTunes)

5. If opening the program still does not activate the drive to start spinning the disk, then close the programs and windows you opened, and repeat step 1-4 and the disk should be spinning and automatically opening the proper program.

Hope that helps!
