The iPad has no provisions for connecting an external GPS device. You need the 3/4G iPad which has built-in GPS.

There are at least two external GPS receivers that will connect to the iPad.
I don't believe the iPad and any GPs connecting to it are FAA approved for in-flight navigation.
Yes the iPad has been FAA approved to supplement/replace maps but is is not approved as a navigaiion device.
I found the Bad Elf GPS to work well with my iPad. It's nice to be able to use navigation without having to buy a cellular model.
