Q: I have up graded my Aperture 2 library to Aperture 3 and have found that te library works fine but when you open the package images that were taken in 2005/ 2006/ 2007 have been put into the 2008 folder and i want to know why and is there a fix for it??

My aperture 2 library has been up graded to Aperture 3 but the images from 2005/2006/2007 have all been shiftrd to 2008 folder in the Package contents although the library looks fine within Aperture.

This is really getting on my nerves as although the images are where they should be within Aperture the Package contents are mixed up with photos from 2008???????

Any suggestions, pleae don't say take into Apple as the genius said what difference does it make where the images are!! Well it does to me as i cannot logically navihate to them within the PAckage????

Aperture 3 organizes the "Masters" folder according to the import session, not according to the capture date. For some reason Aperture must have assumed your older images to have been imported in 2008, not earlier. Did you merge Aperture libraries in 2008?

You can display the import session of an image as one of the "Aperture" metadata tags, if you edit one of the metadata presets to display it and check what Aperture thinks to be the import session. But I do not know of any way to change this tag.

P.S. the only way to control how Aperture stores the master image files is a referenced library; then you can selct the folder where the  masters will be stored.

    Hi there LeonieDF

I notice you say that if i store the images as a referenced library I can select where the masters are stored, I may try this and see if it sorts thngs out.

Either way thanks for the info on the metadata tags etc

    regards

You are welcome, Nigel James Hughes.

Are you familiar with working with referenced master image files? If not, then you may want to read the section "Relocating Referenced Masters" in the User Manual Chapter: Working with Referenced Images

The basic idea is to select the images you want to relocate to a special folder in the browser, and then to use the "File -> Relocate Masters" menu command to move the master files.

But remember, that the masters will no longer be managed by Aperture, and you have to make sure that they will not get accidentally deleted. Also they will no longer eb included in your backup vaults.
