Hi All.

I have been given a USB stick and I have never used one before, so please forgive my ignorance, but how do I use it on my iMAC

( new to apple as well, so I haven't a clue how to find anything )

I know it plugs in the back of the machine, but I thought something would " pop up " and tell me a USB stick had been plugged in, but I'm not getting anything.

Sorry I'm not even sure if I'm on the correct forum my "about this mac"  says I have a mac os x version 10.7.3 if I am in the wrong one Please tell me.

Thank you.

On the menubar in Finder,  Finder > Preferences > General tab > check external disk.

The icon should then show on the desktop.

Open Finder and see if you see the USB thumb drive there. If not, open Utilities/Disk Utilities and see if you see it there. It may need to be formated as GUID and Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Choose Computer from the Finder's Go menu and double-click the drive.

Plug it into one of your USB ports. Then do the following:

    Drive Preparation

    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.

    2. After DU loads select the USB flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.

    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.

    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.

    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.

    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

    Hi Kappy.

Thank you for the quick response, I have lpugged in my usb and clicked on disk utility but  it doesn't show mfgr's ID and size ? in the white box on the left hand size it says 500.11 GB ST 3500418A and below that it just says

Mackintosh HD  and below that it shows a picture of a cd Superdrive.

I also cant find a Partition tab?  in the main box it says  select a disk, volume, or image.?

but it doesnt show how to find them.

along the top it has little picures of a Microscope, info, burn.  ( mount,  eject, enable journaling ) these three tabs are greyed out , and won't do anything.  and a few others.

    So any other suggestions please?

    thanks again

    Thank you captfred.

I tried this and it did not pop up.

    Thanks anyway.

Then you most likely have a defective flash drive. If this is one of those flat stick with the visible gold contacts, then try turning it around in the USB port.

    Thank you keg55.

Again this didn't show, It's probably me, being new to this, I'm a bit of a computer Numpty anyway so I'll probably end up having to get someone to  actually show me how its done.

    Thanks anyway.
