Saving to Home Screen works: This is what I did; 1. Save PDF to Dropbox, 2. Share that link in Dropbox by selecting the drop down arrow at the right of the file and select "Make Available Offline ," then select the drop down arrow to the right of the file again and select "share," then select "Create a link," then select "share link," then select "Copy Link,"

Past the link into Safari. Select the up arrow in the box at the bottom right of Safari - Select "Add to Home Screen.

Lots of steps but pretty simple after one or two tries. I downloaded Adobe Acrobat Reader to my iPhone, emailed a PDF to myself from my computer, opened my email app on my iPhone and found the emailed PDF, touched the PDF to download it, opened it again to reveal action symbol in the lower left of the screen, touched that symbol to reveal the menu of actions, selected Adobe Acrobat Reader from the menu to transfer the PDF to the app, opened Adobe Acrobat Reader (which lists my PDFs), selected and opened the emailed PDF.

Agreed, haven't found a way to add a file that's stored on the iOS device added to the homescreen. However--crazy as it sounds--if you post the file online, then you CAN add it to your home screen. Upload the file, then browse to the file with Safari, then click the "right arrow in a box" icon at the bottom of the screen. From there, you have nine options for the file, one of which is "add to Home Screen".

This functionality was enhanced in iOS 6, but I'm almost certain the ability to "add a webpage to the homescreen" existed in iOS 5. Of course the caveat is the file is not stored on your device: you have to load it as a webpage everytime you access it. But if it's a small file and/or you are using a 3g/4G device, this works pretty nicely.

Best of luck!
