Photos missing after updating to ios 5.5.1

When the IOS 5.1.1 update became available a few days ago, I decided to update. Before doing that, I attached my iPhone 4 to iTunes and synced the phone. When that was complete, I initiated the update.

Once the update was complete, I noticed that all of the photos and videos I had created since mid-March were missing. Are they stored on my computer from when I sync, and if so, how do I access them? Otherwise, why did this happen and how do I prevent it in the future?

You should be importing all pics/vids taken with iphone to your computer regularly as you would with any digital camera.

If you have failed to do this, then your pics/vids are likely gone.

You can try restoring from backup.

True, but that doesn't answer my question. Does syncing back up photos to the computer, and if so, how do I access them? And if not, why did the update erase only a subset of the photos?

Well, it doesn't technically back them up, but rather puts them on the computer. You can access them in either iPhoto or in iTunes. If the photos are already on the computer, try syncing the iPhone and set it to Sync Photos and Videos in Camera Roll.
