Nike+ -- Biking and Elliptical

Will either the free Nike+ (iPod) app on the iPhone 4S, or the paid Nike+ GPS app on the iPhone 4S, allow me to track and upload exercise details while working out on a real versus stationary bicycle, and/or an elliptical machine that is NOT setup for Nike+?

I think that I have answered the bicycle question already via research but I won't know until I get my bike back from the repair shop. I'm going to say, yes, the Nike+ GPS app will work and track bike rides like runs, capture and provide data and allow you to upload to the Nike+ site at the end. At least, that's what I hope that it will do.

From my research so far, the answer on the elliptical machine is no. I'm not even sure that one of the other exercise solutions (i.e. ANT+) is able to track exercise on an elliptical due to the way that steps/impacts are measured. So I'm asking the community if anyone has come across a way to measure, track and/or upload elliptical workouts on an iPhone, using whatever apps and hardware necessary, but preferably a setup that works with Nike+ so that I could keep it all in the same place. Wondering if Nike+ lets you manually upload workout details after the fact? Haven't checked that one out yet.

Anyway, those are my questions - biking and elliptical workout details captured on iPhone Nike+ (free or paid apps) and uploaded to Nike+ site, thanks in advance for your response.

Nike+ GPS should track outdoor cycling just fine. However, indoors, it uses the accelerometer in the phone to measure steps, as you've discovered.

Honestly, I can't think of any way to do what you want. There are other tracking websites (DailyMile, Runkeeper, etc) that will allow you to manually upload workout information. DailyMile will also sync with Nike+ so, in theory, you could sync your GPS workouts to DailyMile from NIke+ and then manually enter your elliptical workouts. You'd need to make a note of the workout data from the machine's readout.

Best of luck.

Update - I tested out the Nike+ GPS app with an elliptical machine this evening. It most definitely works. First test seems to indicate that it is running close to the distance calculated and calibrated for recent walks, may need some additional fine tuning, tbd. But it definitely works, which is great, since I'd like to think that I can get some use out of an app that I paid for 🙂

I've ran the Nike+ App with Location Services On with my iPhone 4S on a TechnoGym Elliptacl four times now and it doesn't work.

No distance elapses, not data stored on the App even though when I plug the phone onto the 30-pin connector on the Elliptical, a Nike+ Icon comes up on the Elliptical Screen. I press "Start run" on the Nike+App and start the workout but the App doesn't read the Elliptical data.
