Iphone 4S duplicate contacts

Welcome to the Apple community.

Check the groups in your contacts app, I suspect that you will have an 'iCloud' group and an 'on my phone' group, and that you'll have the same contacts in each.

Do you have any other groups, have you confirmed that your duplicates are all in your iCloud account. It would seem very strange that duplicates exist in your iCloud account on your phone but not elsewhere.

I have iPhone 4s 32 iOS 5.1.1

Same issue some contacts on IPhone are duplicate but the same contacts only appear once in iCloud.

I have exchange connected also and therefore I assumed that Exchange was creating the problem. Therefore I went in to contacts -> Groups and picked only iCloud and to my surprise the contacts where still duplicated.

Just to be even more sure I logon to the Exchange server an cut confirm that contact from iCloud/iPhone are NOT present in exchange, as planned in the setup I have.

So therefore my conclusion is that the issue is isolated to iCloud iPhone setup.

Any help to solve this issue?

Just add more info I just realized 2 things.

1) when editing one of the duplicated contacts, it changes the information in both contacts.

2) Also found a few of my exchange contacts to be duplicated on iphone and not on server.

This leads me to the conclusion that the issue is related to the "contact app" on the iPhone.

I have this exact same problem too, when I go to delete these of the doubled contacts it handily deletes both, rally disappointed with iCloud I have to say, this is exactly what used to happen with MobileMe.

I have the exact same problem.

I tried manually deleting the contacts from iPhone, iCloud and from my Mac Address book (after I exported contacts to a vcard from mac).

Then I imported the contacts to iCloud, and tried synching it with iPhone just to realise I am back at sqaure one.

So booked an appointment at Genius Bar and it turns out they are not really geniuses.

They were not even able to figure out why this is happening nor have an idea of how to solve this.

They tried resetting my phone couple of times but still I am having the same problem.

Any help??

I have the same problem with an iPhone 4 and a new iPad, the duplicates show up on the device I edited the contact on but no the other. iOS 5.1.1, no problems until I upgraded. Duplicated contacts are not showing up on iCloud or on my iMac. Also, when a contact duplicates, so does the group it is assigned to!

I have same problem on my Iphone4 and wifes Iphone 4S

IOS 5.1.1

Mine does not use cloud, wife's does use icloud

I have gmail and MS Exchange, no .me or mobile. she has yahoo and no .me

I have gone through same hassle as mentioned

Same problem here. Hugely annoying. Bumping in the hope that someone from Apple will see this thread.

I resorted to trying an app. There are plenty of them, but this one is free (though you have to correct each duplicated entry manually - this will take AGES if you have lots of contacts). http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/contacts-duster-easiest-address/id375973177?mt=8

It seems to have worked for me though.

I don't know if this is a universal fix, but I've found if you go to settings>contacts>iCloud and turn off contact sync (after first backing them up) then turn it back on the duplicates seem to be resolve.

That solved my problem, but still it feels like it is wrong that i have to do that..

I have a 4S and have been having this same exact problem with duplicates on my iPhone iCloud contacts, but not on iCloud online or on my contacts desktop. VERY annoying. If I make changes on on my desktop or on my iPhone it duplicates on my iPhone but nowhere else. I backed up my entire contact list, manually deleted than copied over those that had duplicated. (That was before I saw jrcfox's instructions.)

This is something new so "obviously" Apple has done something to cause this since so many of us are having the same issue.
