Can't "Allow user to administer computer"

Hi, I am trying to make one of the standard accounts on my computer an Admin account. I went to the users panel in system prefs, and found the button that says "allow user to administer computer" I click it, but it only stays checked for a fraction of a second. Does anyone know why this could be?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, the padlock icon was unlocked, which is why i could click the Allow Admin button at all. Its still stay selected for no time at all. A minute ago, I tried to make the other account and admin, while i was in that account, by logging in as th Admin and everything. This time, the button stayed selected until, I re-locked the padlock icon. It immediately went back to unselected when i did.

I tried to create another admin account after that. But that account never appeared in the user menu in System Prefs, or in the login window. To test again, I created another standard account, and it worked perfectly.

"Also you could see if theres an issue with the user or the system."

Could you tell me what that means? There are no problems with anything as far as I know... But I could be wrong.

Open the NetInfo Manager in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder, and without unlocking the padlock, look at the membership of the admin group; this group should normally contain an entry for root as well as one for each administrator account on the machine. This group's gid property is listed as 80 on my system. You can make a specific user an administrator by adding that user to the membership of this group; if the gid is something other than 80, click the padlock, type in your password, and change it to 80. Don't delete any users from the admin group, or alter any other accounts, groups, or properties.

Additionally, look in the list of users for the administrator account you previously tried to create; the NetInfo Manager shows the actual state of the Mac OS X system, while System Preferences conceals the more advanced information and controls.
