my ipod mini keeps showing up as "usb mass storage" even after installing driver. How do i fix it?

i tried installing the "apple ipod usb" driver, i reinstalled windows numerous times, i changed the letter onto the ipod, i forced it into disk mode with no luck, and still can't get it to connect! please help, i literally tried everything...the only thing i can think of is that when i install the apple driver it says usb mass storage at the bottom so is it counter acting each other...:(
