Every time I open iCal it freezes and has to be forced quite. I am running the 10.5.8 version and would appreciate any suggestions.

Run console.app (its in Applications/Utilities) then start uCal and see if console shows any error messages.
OK, so what exactly do I do with the error message which reads as follows

Are you using a shared or synchronised calendar, on Google or similar?
The calendar is not shared, or synchronized with anything ... it's just there so I can keep track of when payments are due, who's birthdays are coming up, and what I have to recycle this week ... nothing fancy. I use the "send email one day before" feature a lot, and when this first started happening I switched a lot of my alerts to "display message one day before". Didn't seem to help though.
Can you post a screenshot iof iCal?
Can you open iCal's Preferences? Does anything show in the Accounts tab?
