it makes the sound and says on ipod connected but thats it
Is iTunes open already when you connect the iPod?
Is the iPod connected to a high powered USB 2.0 port located directly on the PC? Try resetting the iPod with it still connected.

I am in the same situation, i have a 5g ipod nano and have tried to sync my music but it wont show up on my itunes that any devices are conncted, did you solve your problem?
What have you tried so far in terms of troubleshooting this issue? Are you plugging the iPod into a high powered USB 2.0 port on the back of your PC? Have you tried a different USB cable?
What happens if you try to reset the device with it still connected to the PC?
Has this iPod ever worked on this PC or is this the first time you have time you have tried connecting it?
