First an iMac I bought in 2005, it died in 2008
This MBP I bought in 2008, it died in 2012
It's a little EXPENSIVE buying a Mac for a 3 years lifetime
I think it's enough... Next laptop will be a sexy little ThinkPad
How long will the Mac Mini I recently bought will last...

May 15, 2012 11:43 AMby ds store,You want a machine that lasts, your going to have to buy a Windows 64 bit gaming tower, not one of these cheap store PC's, but a good durable box and a common use parts and powerful power supply.
10 years easy, and Microsoft supports the operating system for 10+ years. Change the monitor, keyboard, mouse, video card etc when you need too.
Nice long lasting corporate box, clean out the dust every 6 months and it will last a very long time.
Laptops never last long as they used too.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least two independent backups.) Don’t erase the Lion recovery partition, if present.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
1. Boot from your recovery partition (10.7 or later), a local Time Machine backup volume (10.7.2 or later), or your installation disc (10.6.8 or earlier.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”

2. If you have a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive.

3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

They are also a little expensive to just give up on. Have you tried to boot with a CD or external drive? Notebook hard drives, PCs or Macs, tend to die after about three years. All notebooks, including Macs, are made in the same factories in China. The only difference is that the Apple quality control is better. Still, when you sell as many machines as Apple does, there are a small number of failures. That is what AppleCare is for.

The machine is dead... Took it to an Apple reseller they told me it's a known failure on the MBP 2k8, logic board needs to be replaced.
It's not the HD... and a friend of mine, same computer we bought both at the same time => same problem...
I'm a Mac lover, I even made a website in 2k5 when I bought that iMac (www.macamour.com/blog) and, to me, it's not easy. to give up on Mac computers but enough...
I will not renew any Apple device, my Apple TV, Mac mini, iPad and iPods should better not give me up within 3 years...

If it is a known failure then Apple will fix it. Is it the Nvidia graphics board failure? If so, Apple will fix it four years after purchase. It seems silly to have one failure then stop buying product in favor of other brands that have much higher rates of failure.
