I am trying to restore my Address Book contacts all but one of which vanished a couple days ago - but when I look at it in Time Machine it reads "last update 5/11/12" even as far back as Sep 2011. I've checked other files and TM has saved the correct older versions. Thoughts?

I hadn't but when I did - no joy. What puzzles me is that even when I look at a date from several months ago I see the same this I see today.

You need to restore the actual folder where the Address Book data is stored. You should find it in your Library folder (~/Library/Application Support/Address Book). This has happened to me twice since I downloaded the Office 2011 service pack and it rebuilt my Outlook database (which syns to my Address Book).

The Address Book should be in the Library folder under your home folder which is hidden by default.
Hold down the Option key while in the "Go" menu of Finder and the Library folder will appear.

The plug-in folder is at the root of the Library folder. You want to go into the Application Support folder. I hope this helps...
