May 16, 2012 4:56 AM in response to lion00by EZ Jim,(1) Use good (means BRIGHT) lighting for best pictures from your camera.
More info: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3097
(This old article still calls the camera "iSight", but the info applies to FaceTime (and FaceTime HD) cameras, too.)
(2) You write "frequently", not "always", so your Mac may have hardware problems.
If your problem continues even in very bright light, use your Mac's Disk Utility to repair permissions.
Then download and apply the latest Combo Update for your Mac OS: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1524
Repair permissions again immediately following the system restart that completes the Combo update.
Properly applying the Combo version of updates can sometimes correct software problems, but, if your trouble is caused by a hardware problem, there are no user serviceable parts of iSight. For hardware help, contact an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.
Unless you have a current backup, make one before relinquishing your Mac for service.
