and canvas have disappeared. I have tried to close the the application and restart it to no avail. Now get this message. Any ideas?

The message is not showing up in your post, but go to your Final Cut Browser and double-click on your sequence to re-open you timeline and canvas.

When I double-click on the sequence in the browser a "general error" message appears in the viewer. When I click on Okay to remove it, a error message reads, "out of memory."
Have you restarted your computer?

Is their enough space left on the hdd you're working from? Scratch/render files etc.
You can try to flush the render files using the render manager.
