Can I change the formatting of mail to the 'classic' format? If so, how?

Go to Preference > Viewing for Mail and click the button labeled Use classic layout.

This was helpful, but how about web mail? I hate the iPad look, it takes up too much space, the old way that shows a list on top was much faster for quick edits when you get a lot of email, I get over 500 a day so the new version is really slow for me.
