Trouble installing Safari Update On Windows

I'm havind trouble installing a Safari update. I keep gettting a message "Could not open key" followed by a series of identifying numbers. Installation then rolls back. I was having this problem with a Quicktime update but was able to overcome it by going to the website and downloading the update. I am using Windows Vista.

Safari-OTHER, Windows Vista

Doublechecking before proceeding ... is that key of the following form?

UNKNOWN\Components\[LongStringOfLettersAndNumbers]\[LongStringOfLettersAndNumber s].

(The \Components\ part is pretty significant ... there's a similar one that can hit folks which mentions \Source List\Media\ instead.)

🙂 Many thanks.

Variations of this sort of thing can hit itunes for Windows installs too (usually on 64-bit systems). I've got a user tip for the iTunes for Windows variation.

So, let's try Steps 2 through 17 from that user tip:

"Could not open key: UNKNOWN\Components\[LongStringOfLettersAndNumbers]\[LongStringOfLettersAndNumbe rs]" error messages when installing iTunes for Windows

... and then try another Safari update. Does it go through without the error message this time?
