Q: Trouble installing Safari Update On Windows

I'm havind trouble installing a Safari update.  I keep gettting a message "Could not open key" followed by a series of identifying numbers.  Installation then rolls back.  I was having this problem with a Quicktime update but was able to overcome it by going to the website and downloading the update.  I am using Windows Vista.

Safari, Windows Vista

I keep gettting a message "Could not open key" followed by a series of identifying numbers.

Doublechecking before proceeding ... is that key of the following form?

    UNKNOWN\Components\[LongStringOfLettersAndNumbers]\[LongStringOfLettersAndNumber s].

(The \Components\ part is pretty significant ... there's a similar one that can hit folks which mentions \Source List\Media\ instead.)

Thanks for responding.  The message actually says-

Could not open key!  UNKNOWN\components\ [long series of letters and numbers]  Verify you have sufficient access to that key or cobtact your support personnel

    Many thanks.

Variations of this sort of thing can hit itunes for Windows installs too (usually on 64-bit systems). I've got a user tip for the iTunes for Windows variation.

So, let's try Steps 2 through 17 from that user tip:

"Could not open key: UNKNOWN\Components\[LongStringOfLettersAndNumbers]\[LongStringOfLettersAndNumbe rs]" error messages when installing iTunes for Windows

... and then try another Safari update. Does it go through without the error message this time?

Actually no.  I uninstalled Safari, followed all 17 steps; on step 14 select administrators and click apply the following message came up "Registry Editor could not set owner on the key currently selected, or some of its subkeys".  I tried reinstalling Safari and got the same message as before.

I went throgh the Regedit procedure again but on step 12 instead of selecting Advanced I gave full control to all selections since I am the only one that uses the computer anyways.  I then ran Safari update again, it worked with no error messages and I now have Safari back.  Thank you for all your help!

Excellent news! Glad you got things working again, and many thanks for reporting back with your resolution.
