Airport Extreme setup question

I just setup my new Airport Extreme to Create a New Network. There is a box to check that says "Allow setup over WAN".

I checked the box & I have the network working okay, but do not understand what this means & should I have checked ithe box or not?

It is not necessary to allow setup over WAN unless you intend to reconfigure the Extreme from outside your LAN. There may be reasons to do this but if your Extreme is normally accessible to you, leave it un-checked.

You would need the AirPort's device password to configure it over WAN.

... So this is just a remote setup option?

Yes. If you need an excuse to go to your son's place go ahead, but I would not concern myself with it.

If you did not assign the Extreme a unique password, someone with nefarious intent could conceivably change its configuration using the Extreme's default password, but it would first be necessary to access the Extreme from beyond your ISP's router. That presents its own challenge.

Making progress. i got the wifi working & all 3 of my mac computers connected.

One last problem that I cannot issolate if it is my Airport Extreme, computer or printer.

I connected my Brothers 2270DW printer to the Extreme USB, set it up in Airport Utilities, & added the printer to all 3 computers.

Only problem is every time I print, the printer prints the page & goes into Pause. It does this on all 3 computers. After I print the printer goes to the Pause mode. The next time I try to print I have to open the print window & click Resume. The printer always stopds in the Pause mode.

Any setting I can change on Extreme, computer or printer to prevent this??

I connected my Brothers 2270DW printer to the Extreme USB,

Don't do that. The 2270DW is wireless. Connecting it to the Extreme's USB port will probably just confuse things. I'm sure it's possible to leave it connected that way but since it's wireless just configure it to connect to your wireless network.

As I recall that printer has a front panel menu option to automatically detect and connect to your wireless network. Do that, and on each of the computers you use, delete the printer in Print & Scan, and add it again.

Thanks for the reply. I spent all morning trying to get the wireless to work. The manual gives 2 methods, the automatic wireless (one push) method, & temporarily using USB. I tried both methods several times & gave up.

Thought the USB to the Extreme would be better. At least I got it to print.

Any suggestions on setting it wireless?

Thanks John. I downloaded the BRAdmin Light Utility & opened it, but nothing shows up. I unpluged the USB from the computer & reset it. Still it does not find any device. What configuration should I have the printer in to do this? Do I need to go to section 3 in the manual & do the wireless configuration first?

Thanks again John. I used the Infrastructure configuration & completed the setup. I looks good & I was able to wirelessly print the test page from the BRAdnin Light Utility.

However, I cannot get the printer to add to my printer list. Every time I click add printer, I select the Brothers printer & get the notice Apple will download & install the software. But then it always fails & says the software is not available. I have been using the printer for several months on USB so I should already have the software.

Any idea why I can't enable the printer?
