Q: what is com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist.lockfile?

Just updated to 10.7.4 a few days ago.  I went to watch a movie and the optical drive can't read my DVD.  In the plast it was recommended I delete the com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist file as it alledgely retain a list a previously played movies.  The glitch was that it would get the titles "confused" with what was in the optical drive but the drive, using the saame title showed to be different.  Un able to identify, it would eventually eject it.  At least, that what I was led to believe.

Looking in the "preferrences" folder, I found and deleted the file BUT I also found com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist.lockfile.  What is it and should I delete it as well?

IF this "fix" is not correct, which it does not appear to be, what do I need to do to get  my OD working again?  I know it can be done as I have done it in the past but I cannot find where I originally located the instruction.

Won't be on 10.7.4 for about 8-9 hours to check, but...

To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...

Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.

Do DVDs work in the new account?

It appears lockfiles have something to do with stopping more than one application at a time changing preferences for a service.  I doubt it is the lockfile that is affecting DVD playing.

Does the drive play any DVDs, or is it just the one?  If just the one won't, it may be the DVD.  If none then check:

What about CDs?  If it will play those then it could be the DVD component of the drive has gone bad.  If it won't play CDs then it could be the drive in general is having issues. You could then try a SMC reset.

This is silly as all get out but... All I hd to do is shut down, unplug, let sit for 15-20 sec and restart.  Voila, it started the disk on the first try, no muss no fuss.  Thanks for the link to http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964.

well.. I appears it may have been a coincidence.  I'm having the same issue with the movie 2012 (2009).  I put it on a Windows 7 machine and though it can read the disk, it will not play the movie.  I found 2 Apps on it that have me confused.  PC_clickme and Mac_clickme.  What are those?!!?  When I right click one the E drive icon, it does not give me theoption to open or play the disk, intead, the option is to install application.  I don't get it.  Is this some form of protection or what?!!?

    Any thoughts?
