iPod 4th generation Volume stuck on high

Recently, my ipod's volume control stopped working. Now it's currently stuck on a painfully high volume. Everytime i try to change the volume, the ipod clicks as

if it's changing the volume, but the sound basically stays the same.

(So basically, on screen, when the volume is set on low or off, the ipod continues to play at max volume).

I've tried the following more than several times.

-Reset the ipod using the ipod cable.

-Reset the ipod by simultaneously holding the menu and play/pause button.

-Set volume limit to low.

Basically I'm out of ideas. I will not consider replacing the ipod.

However, I was considering buying earbuds with built in in-line volume control.

Will this somehow solve my solution?

iPod nano, Windows XP, Any help will be highly appreciated

Well, if it's a hardware issue, then I guess you are out of luck.

It may help a little, but if you aren't wanting to have it replaced, what other options do you really leave yourself?
