I have imported around 20,000 photos into iphoto 11 in one go. Probably not the best idea, but now I have 2 problems...
1. There are many duplicates
2. I can't easily face recognise my children because the baby pictures all look similar
So I would prefer to remove everything and start again - I will import year by year and then can easily distinguish children
How do I delete and get back to a fresh iphoto from scratch ?

If you're starting over from scratch just trash that Library and make a new one.
To trash a Library: Drag it form the Pictures Folder to the Trash
To make a new one: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Thanks - that seems to be helping - I now have a fresh looking iPhoto to play with
Because my photos had previoulsy filled the drive, I needed to also empty the trash, which prompted another question - how do I see the files in the system trash ?
Click on the Trash icon on the Dock.
Thanks agains - there I was looking in Finder, and it was in front or me on the Dock
I'd like to makr your original response as "having solved my question" but I can't find a way to do that
