How do I update without losing everything?

I bought laptop, downloaded itunes and have recently synced my phone to it. Now my music is on there but no pictures which is fine. But every time I plug my phone in it tells me that there is an update available for 5.1.1. I click update then it sends me a warning message saying updating the iOs 5.1.1. will delete the apps, media, and including the itunes purchases. To preserve the content update it to the computer where i sync music, apps, photos, and videos. Where and how do I do that and if I've already sync my phone, i think, is it safe to continue the update without losing all my music and pictures on my phone?

Some one please help it's been so long since I've done this

Sync your phone with iTunes (which backs it up and transfers any purchases to your iTunes library). Then import all your photos to your computer to be safe (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083) and back up your contacts (by, for example, syncing them with iCloud by going to Settings>iCloud and turning Contacts to On). Then you should be able to safely update. (Your music should already be in your iTunes library.) Be careful to pay attention to the progress information you see at the top of iTunes, and on your iPhone screen so you do not unplug your phone until the update is complete.
