Lost data after 5.1.1

I am really upset right now.

I tried to update my iPad 2 using iTunes, but then some error message popped up saying that the update failed and that I had to restore.

Thankfully my notability notes were preserved when I restored using backup but now I've lost books that I've purchased in iBooks.

Is there any way that I can re-download those books without paying for them again?

Also why the heck did this happen? I will never ever update using itunes again, that's for sure.

iPad 2, iOS 5.1.1

As long as the books are still available in the store, and you use the same iTunes account as you originally used to buy them, then you should be able to re-download them for free (on the iPad they should appear in the Purchased tab in the store in the iBooks app) : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
