I am trying to connect to a public wifi network.  My iPad connects marvoulesly.  My iPhone not so much.  I have an iPhone 4 and everytime I go to connect, it goes to a pop up page where I'm supposed to click a link to adhere to their TOS.  When I get the pop up page I get "Hotspot login cannot open the page because it could not establish a secure connection to the server"

I've reset the network settings and nothing changed.  Same error message.  Any tips or tricks to fix this?  I'm laid up on bed rest in the hospital and would really rather that I not use all my data minutes...

Thanks!

WOO HOO!  I found a solution to my problem!

I had to turn off the wifi

Then I had to turn off the cellular data

Then I turned the wifi back on and viola!  It worked.

I've gone back and turned the cellular data back on and I've got wifi and cell phone usage

I have no idea why something like that would be necessary, but THANK YOU!!  I've had the same issue for the past 2 days since changing my iPhone 3Gs APN when I switched to StraightTalk from AT&T.  Could not figure this out, other wifi worked fine, but that TOS brought up the :

    ERROR:

Hotspot login cannot open the page because it could not establish a secure connection to the server

Seems to be working fine now and I can't thank you enough b/c I've searched all over the internet for solutions and most said to check the date or that there was a problem with the server or some other BS that was not the real problem.

    Thanks again!

It must be a straight talk issue as that is what my provider is (Switched from AT&T in April).  Either way, I'm so glad that I was able to help you out.  Trust me, I looked forever to find a solution!

I wondered.  Perhaps this thread will now help others with the same issue.

Updated to iOS6 on an iPhone 4 this morning, and now when I attempt to connect to my work wireless, it connects for a moment then attempts to popup some login page (I sometimes get the hotspot login error you've mentioned) and because the page doesn't exist I can't get connected to the wireless netowrk.

What the heck have apple broken in this update?

Why when joining a normal wireless network is my phone even going near a Login page? What is this and how do I disable it?

Oh, and I'm posting here because your suggestions of disabling the Wi-Fi and Cellular data netowkrs doesn't solve the problem.

[Edit: seems while typing this leaving the cellular data disabled, it's now letting my join wireless - seems to be some timeout on it fixing the issue - I'd still like to know what this login page is it's attempting to locate is for.]

I had a slightly different message "error opening page Hotspot login could not open the page because the server stopped responding" but the remedy in this thread worked with my AT&T iPhone5. Thanks

Perfect!  Thanks so much, fixed my problem perfectly.  And I just switched to Straight Talk too.

    Thanks again.

Thanks to the OP for the info.  It worked for me, but I didn't like the idea of turning off cellular data everytime I want to use hot spots, so I did further googling.

One forum post suggested to reset the network setting in the Iphone, so I did.

After resetting the network settings, you no longer need to turn off cellular data to access hot spot.

    Hope this helps.

    Guys,

This is the easiest and convenient solution -

Solution: Settings - Wi-Fi --> select your network --> scroll to the bottom and choose HTTP Proxy -> Auto

With this, you dont need to turn the cellular data on/off

    Not so fast my friend.

I have tried this several times & most assuredly it does not help, at least not on a TOS server.  Especially not if you have Straight Talk, as I do also.

Just found this thread today & will be attempting the wifi & Cell Data Off remedy this evening when I go to work.
