Q: iPhone 3GS (AT&T) data services & phone service not working after upgrade to 5.1.1

I've upgraded my iPhone 3GS to iOS v. 5.1.1 and now both my phone service and data service are no longer working. I called AT&T's (my carrier) tech support and they got it working for a few minutes but as soon as I got off the phone with the agent it stopped working! My account with them is current. Any help would be appreciated.

You should try to restore it

try a reset, hold down the home/power button together until you see the apple logo and then release, then wait for the phone to boot back up.

UPDATE: The problem for me has been resolved. After awhile I learned that my co-workers with various models of iPhones with various versions of iOS were experiencing the same issue as I. A short time later the problem ceased for all of us at the same time. So it was clearly a local technical issue of some sort. The funny thing is is that I spent nearly two hours on AT&T tech support and even though they ran my address to check for known outtages/issues nothing came up.

Thanks razmee209 and caio09 for your replies.

I'm having the same problem with an iPhone 4 on 5.1 and iPhone 4s on 5.1.1, this has been on going for a week and they can seem to fix it.  The longest it has worked is 4 days straight.  Both phones seem to cycle from 5 bars with network connectivity to no service and back again.

5.1.1 Seemed to brick my 3GS, which was working perfectly before. Reset doesn't work (Apple logo never comes up) and restore appears to work based on what iTunes says, but after several attempts to restore, my 3GS is basically a brick.

Did you try a hard reset? A hard reset is different than a regular reset.

If you don't know how, here is a tutorial on how to do it.

    Hope this helps.

Yeah, the hard resent is the only reset I ever do, because it always seems to solve issues! This is maybe the first time a hard reset didn't work for me.

BTW, have you clicked your own link, and tried to find a tutorial on doing a hard reset? I clicked around your site a bit and failed to find it. I found a page full of unlabeled YouTube videos, but I have no idea which video was which.

Kevin41269, did you ever figure out your problem?  Just recently this started happening for me on an ATT network 3GS phone - the bars go up and down, sometimes drop, and the data will stop working.  I have to turn off data and 3GS, put it in airplane mode, then take it off airplane mode, then turn data back on, then turn on 3G capability, and it all starts working and communicating again, but it never lasts more than a few days at most before it redevelops the problem.  What you describe sounds exactly like my problem so I'm wondering if/how it ultimately resolved for you?  Provider tech support doesn't seem to be able to offer a permanent fix to me.

Like junkyardheart, mine cleared up.  After talking with tech support for 2 to 3 hours trying all kinds of things they opened a ticket to have a technician checkout the local cell tower.  The next day tech support called me and I told them it was worse.  Then they had started looking at my past reports on "Mark the Spot" app and open several more tickets and had a crew checkout the area.

I received a call two days later and they had two bad cell sites.  With the next day being Saturday they had the whole weekend scheduled as an outage to fix the problems.  By noon on Saturday everything was great.

I even checked out my download speed using a few speed apps and I was pulling 2-3 Mbps down and pushing 1+ Mbps up.

I think the update exposed a serious problem that had existed for a while.
