Shades of grey on AppleWorks 6.2.9

Hi all,

I am trying to create icons using AppleWorks 6.2.9. From what I see, the levels of grey are pretty limited, and I see no option to increase them. The color palette shows 16 levels of grey and the lighter and darker buttons only 8. I need more levels for proper shading. Is there any way to change this, or is this the wrong tool?
