bought this 3rd gen with 4.2 installed...cleared all data so i can sync & register as own...now all i get is the "apple scull" & it wont connect in my itunes acct..???

Sounds like you ipod has been jailbroken.

okay how do i fix it
Put it in DFU mode (Google it for YouTube instructions) and Restore it as a new device.
And hope for the best. Not all jailbreaks can be removed and can permanently disable your device.
Note that you posted in a thread that's a year and a half old, not usually the best strategy for getting assistance.
