I updated my iPad 2 with iOS 5.1.1. After that I am not able to see airplay button. Any help to fix it would be appreciated.

I have also noticed the AirPlay button occasionally does not show up in many of my apps. It does always seem to be available in the audio controls of the multitasking bar. When it doesn't show up double click the Home button to reveal the multitasking bar and swipe to the right to reveal the audio controls where you should see an AirPlay button. Once you select an AirPlay device the icon should appear in the apps again.

The AirPlay speaker (Apple TV) dropping from the network and the AirPlay icon disappearing on an iOS device could be 2 separate issues. If the AirPlay speaker drops off the network the icon will disappear from iOS. In my case, I have 5 Airplay devices, it is not AirPlay speakers dropping off my network rather than the icon not properly showing up in the media apps on my iPad. My AirPlay speakers are still on the network however the icon does not show up. I can always activate the speakers from the playback controls (by the orientation lock button) which is always there. Once an AirPlay speaker is activated the AirPlay button properly shows up beside the volume control in the media apps. I have seen this issue many time on my iPad, but have yet to see it with my iPhone.

Generally if you are having issues with the Apple TV dropping from your network I would look at your WiFi network. AirPlay and Apple TVs work best with a good strong, stable wireless network. I just tried setting up an AirPlay speaker for my sister's patio. It works OK in the house but their 802.11b router in the basement will not run a speaker beyond 3' of the back door even though you can browse the Internet perfectly fine. Only options for her was to move the router, I also suggested updating the router to a better quality 802.11n router or to use a bluetooth speaker which is the route she chose.

It's working for me now. Not sure what happened but the issue was with my home theater receiver which turning it off then back on fixed it. I run all my devices through my receiver using it for an HDMI switcher then one HDMI cable to the TV.

It may have been a coincidence or the ATV update sent a bad audio signal that messed with some of the automatic audio switching in the receiver. All I was getting was a faint audio signal out of one of my rear speakers while trying to play anything on the ATV. I reset the ATV2 then restored it with no fix then when I cycled the power on the receiver everything works properly.
