Crazy behaviour with contacts sync

IOS 5.1 / iTunes 10.6.1 / Snow Leopard 10.6.8

On USB sync with computer strange behaviour...

Deleted numerous contacts within Address Book on MAC, the old contact exist on iPad. Sync via iTunes (USB) and ticked "replace contactas on this iPad". Sync finishes but all the old contacts still remain.

2) Unticked "Contacts" in iTunes - sync with device and all contacts disappear - Great, exactly as expected. However after ticking "contacts" nad performing 2nd sync - all the old contacts reappear on iPad.... How, they are not in the address book anymore. If I look in the address book folder I can still see the deleted .abcdp files.

Problem with devices running IOS 5.1.1, but not 4.2, where it works as expected.

Anyway, this worked....

1) backed up address book … File>Export

2) deleted all contacts in address book

3) deleted all files within: library>user>application support>address book

4) unticked sync contacts in iTunes - synced with device

5) open address book: import file (the backup file)

6) open iTunes: tick sync contacts and sync'd
