Trying to set up new LaCie 2tb external hard drive

I hooked it all up. MacBook sees the external drive. I get a Lacie set up icon on the desktop. Click it and I get password, do that and I get a bouncing arrow icon on the lower tool bar, then it goes away afte about two seconds...then nothing. What am I doing, or NOT doing? Thanks
