how do I turn off the cursor hover function?

I recently acquired a refurbished Ibook4; works great, but when the cursor is over a link or function it opens the link or performs the function, whether I like it or not. I need to get this function disabled- I understand this is called a "hover" function, which doesn't appear to be very popular. Thank you.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.

Try going to System Preferences > Keyboard and Mouse > Trackpad, and make sure that the "Ignore accidental trackpad input" box is checked.
