Remove and reinstall all iTunes and Quicktime related components as explained here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1923

1. Remove iTunes and related components from the Control Panel

Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order and then restart your computer:

  1. iTunes
  2. QuickTime
  3. Apple Software Update
  4. Apple Mobile Device Support
  5. Bonjour
  6. Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)

Important: Uninstalling these components in a different order, or only uninstalling some of these components may have unintended affects.

2. Verify iTunes and related components are completely uninstalled

In most cases removing iTunes and its related components from the Control Panel will remove all supporting files belonging to those programs. In some rare cases those though, files may be left behind. After following the previous steps, you must confirm that the following files and folders have been removed. If any are left behind, remove them now:

  • C:\Program Files\Bonjour
  • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\
  • C:\Program Files\iTunes\
  • C:\Program Files\iPod\

Note: Follow the additional steps at the end of this article if you receive the alert "Cannot delete iPodService.exe: It is being used by another person or program" when trying to delete this folder.

  • C:\Program Files\QuickTime\
  • C:\Windows\System32\QuickTime
  • C:\Windows\System32\QuickTimeVR

If you have a 64-bit version of Windows, you will need to confirm that the following folders have been removed as well:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Bonjour
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\iPod\ Note: Follow the additional steps at the end of this article if you receive the alert "Cannot delete iPodService.exe: It is being used by another person or program" when trying to delete this folder.
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\QuickTime\
  • C:\Windows\SysWOW64\QuickTime
  • C:\Windows\SysWOW64\QuickTimeVR

3. Reinstall iTunes and related components

After verifying that iTunes is completely uninstalled, restart your computer and then download and install the latest version of iTunes.

I don't have any of them on my computer to uninstall/delete.

These programs are not installed:

  1. iTunes
  2. QuickTime
  3. Apple Software Update
  4. Apple Mobile Device Support
  5. Bonjour
  6. Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)

These folders do not exist:

  • C:\Program Files\Bonjour
  • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\
  • C:\Program Files\iTunes\
  • C:\Program Files\iPod\
  • C:\Program Files\QuickTime\
  • C:\Windows\System32\QuickTime
  • C:\Windows\System32\QuickTimeVR
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Bonjour
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\iPod\
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\QuickTime\
  • C:\Windows\SysWOW64\QuickTime
  • C:\Windows\SysWOW64\QuickTimeVR

Thanks for the help though.

Everything else has installed correctly so far, never had any issues installing until now.

I've just tried uninstalling and reinstalling VLC and it works fine, so I tried something more drastic and uninstalled and rebooted and reinstalled avast! which also worked fine.. so it's not a problem with Windows or the installer.

Am currently downloading the 32 bit itunes from filehippo, will see.

One way or another you received a corrupted download. Supposedly having a popup blocker active can contribute to this problem as well, so allow popups temporarily.

If none of the above named components remain then the only possibility is whatever remains in your browser's cache or Windows temporary files directory.

Delete any temporary files that may exist in IE, Chrome, Opera, or whatever you used to download iTunes and/or QuickTime. They may be found in "browsing history" and / or "temporary Internet files" but different browsers store their temporary files different ways.

The 64 bit version of iTunes is the one you want; downloading the 32 bit version will likely result in the same error if any of these temporary files remain.

The last hint may be found in the following

If the issue persists, try the following steps:

  1. Locate and remove all copies of QuickTimeInstaller.exe and iTunesSetup.exe that have been downloaded. (you seem to have completed this)
  2. Download the latest version of QuickTime without iTunes first. Make sure you can open QuickTime Player before moving on to the next step.
  3. Download the latest version of iTunes. Important: When prompted if you want to run or save iTunesSetup.exe, click Run.

Perhaps try downloading and saving a copy of the installer to a different (64-bit) PC. Copy the iTunes64Setup.exe installer to an external hard-drive, or a large-enough thumb drive or burn it to a CD-R. Carry the installer back to your PC, copy the installer to your hard drive. (Don't run the install from the ExHD, thumb or CD-R.) Start the install by doubleclicking the iTunes64Setup.exe file.

Does that go through any better for you?

The 64-version contains the 64-bit version of the iTunes miniplayer componentry, the 64-bit version of the GEAR drivers (used for importing and burning), the 64-bit iPod service, and the 64-bit versions of Apple Mobile Device Support and Bonjour.

So you might run into trouble syncing ipods and iOS devices, doing network-related stuff, or burning and importing CDs. But if you're not doing any of that and the 32-bit version is running, it might be worth sitting pat with what you've got.

I've had a lot more problems with apple, their software and devices than just this. No help from apple, mind you, just ppl on the web who try to be nice and help out. Thanks go to the nice people.

This particular issue turned out to be that apple download site was not linking me to a valid exe for 64 bit installer for windows 7 HP 64 bit.

"if was an invalid link then there'd be problems posted everywhere".. good point. However, I downloaded it three times, two different laptops, two different browsers. Two downloads via adsl, one via 3g. All did not install. filehippo provided a valid installer first time, as did VLC and avast!. Go figure.

Come to think of it, I should try to download the 64bit installer from someone other than apple.
