Q: iPhone 4 Black Screen But Phone Works

I have used the iPhone 4 (Factory Unlocked) for more than a year now with only minor issues. Like on a usual day I was playing a word game "Rumble" then quit the game, connected my earphones for music & pressed the "Home" button on the phone to unlock it and the screen was Black. This was a sudden shocker!! . I just put the phone to rest for a while & after about an hour crossed my fingers and tried the Home button again but the Black screen continued. So the backlight of the iPhone works I can say that bcoz I see the phone luminates but the "Slide to Unlock" is cannot be seen. Since I have been using the phone for a while I know the exact position of "Slide to Unlock" so if I slide my finger it unlocks too with the default "unlocking (click) noise" but again the icons of the apps cannot be seen, all I see is a fadely luminated grid. I receive SMS's and Calls although I cant read them nor can I see whos calling. Since the screen is blank I cant operate the phone but the phone seems to be working. I hence tried the reboot, restart, shutdown & start again, restore backup, update iOS everything a desperate user would do but nothing has worked till now. There is not much discussion on this issue anywhere hence No resolution. I am gonna visit an Apple  service center today and keep my fingers crossed. I have taken utmost care of the phone. Till date it is scratchless, spotless. I miss my phone .

Hold he home button and the menu button together for 10 seconds. Apple logo will appear, it'll take another 20 or so seconds and will have reset and work properly again :-)

Well i dont think it matters but try this method

    -hold home button 12seconds

    -after wait 3 seconds

-then hold home button and lock button till u get apple pic on your screen and it will probabily maximum take up to 60 secs ,,, give it a try and thumbs up

I just had this problem where i was playing a game and suddenly the screen went black and i could still hear the music playing. So i looked up this page and it helped out. I did the home+wake up key trick on my iphone 4 and after 10 seconds it showed the white apple. I just had to wait a couple of minutes after that for my screen to turn on. Thanks everyone.

My iphone did the exact same thing last night, I left it to die over night and woke up to my alarm going off but no screen. I just had to hold doen the home and lock screen buttons at the same time and it came back on. I am unaware if it did end up dying or not.. but its working perfectly now.

My phone's screen has been black for a day now, and it is still fully functioning, yet the screen is not illuminating. So far, to see what has been on my lock screen I have been screenshotting it and connecting it to my lap top so I could see what was happening, and my screen looks distorted in size and format. I am unable to unlock my phone though since I am not able to see what I am doing. Siri refuses to work as well, and I have already tried holding down the lock and home button at the same time (also not working). I can not seem to figure out how to restore my iphone 4S via laptop/itunes, as you can tell I am having a lot of difficulty and I'm in desperate need. Anyone that knows how to help, please respond :l - Lou

This morning, my passcode stopped working and, a few minutes later, my screen stopped working. I figured I would solve the screen problem first. I saw all kinds of solutions on this thread for taking the back off and unscrewing something (don't!), kicking the phone into DFU mode, and, finally, holding down the power and the sleep/wake button for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo. This forces the phone to do a hard reboot.

I have an iPhone 4S running IOS 7.0.03. I tried the last thing (holding down the power and sleep/wake button) because it was the easiest. This worked and it fixed both problems! Reading throughout the thread, this is the fix that seemed to helped most people.

I wanted to add my comment because I think this is the correct solution and encourage people to try it first.

I tried everything in this post for my wife's 4S and it still goes black after a while.  It may work for a few seconds or a few hours.  It usually will go black after it locks itself.
