iPhone won't sync with iTunes. Help?

iPhone won't sync with iTunes. It just says, "waiting for sync to start." But no matter how long I leave it like that, it never syncs. Wirelessly or via USB. I have restarted both my computer and my phone. I have deleted and reinstalled iTunes. I have installed the latest version of iTunes and the software on my phone is up to date. Nothing seems to work.

Is there anything I can do to fix this problem?

iPhone 4, iOS 5.1.1

I found this on another thread --

Keep your iphone connected. Quit iTunes. Reopen iTunes. Sync begins automatically. It worked for me and several others who had already followed the advice.

So easy.

Doesn't always seem to work. I had to try two times before it started. This seems to be intermittent. Sometimes it just runs ok. Other times, I get stuck in "waiting for Sync to start" land.
