Q: how do I connect a Macbook to acd

I have an Apple 20" cinema display, manufactured around 2003 model: M8893ZM/A.

It has a connector which I believe is called an Apple Display Connector.

Please can anyone tell me if there is a cable/adapter that will connect to my MacBook 80gb manufactured 2006 which I beleive has a display port connector (not MINI).  Any offer of help gratefully appreciated.

The ACD connector would need to be female if I observe the pins correctly.

Yep, the M8661LL/B is what you need. They originally sold for about $100 new, but can go for much more on ebay, etc., since Apple stopped selling them.

I use the same display on my Core 2 Duo MBP with one of these adapters, and it works great.

Just be aware that online auctions have the later aluminum DVI 20" Apple Cinema Display (A1081/M9177LL/A) for not a lot more than the adapters go for. So you might want to check those out, as not only do they "match" the aesthetic of the MBP, they also have a USB 2 hub (vs USB 1 in the older display), and a FireWire 400 hub built in.

Oh, and you'll need an adapter if you don't have a regular DVI port. See this table on Apple's Support site to verify what you have.

Thank you Larry and for quoting PN. Not sure it is cost effective though given my display is seven years old now.

I would say it probably isn't cost effective any longer to adapt an Acrylic Apple Studio or Cinema display to a DVI machine, unless you already have, or you can get, the DVI-ADC adapter for $100 or less. Here's one for $188...

The aluminum Cinema Displays are getting cheaper by the day. The 20" usually go for $100- $200, the 23" for $200-500 (in the past couple days, I bought one for $360 shipped, another sold for over $500, and a third for just over $200...). Even the 30" seem to be offered for anywhere between $400 and $1,100. In all cases, though, watch out for the ones being sold without the power brick!

Going to an LED Cinema Display (24 or 27") on a DVI Mac is just as problematic. There is an adapter out there to use those displays on a DVI Mac, but they are $150, and, of course, the newer displays sell for much more than the older ones...
