Quicktime problem

I have the latest version of Quicktime loaded,(along with iTunes) on a Windows 7 system. Quicktime is working within iTunes but frustratingly (really really) when i try to view any videos within the Apple website it tells me to download Quicktime (I already have it obviously). Even if I go through the process of downloading it again or repairing it through the downloads then nothing changes. As soon as I try to watch a video within Apple.com (UK or US) it just wants me to download Quicktime.
Its really annoying as I'm planning on spending a considerable sum of money of Apple products in the next few weeks and this isn't filling me with a lot of confidence in their systems. Any answers please?

That sounds like you're trying to view the movies via Internet Explorer, but you haven't got the QuickTime ActiveX control installed.

Are you attempting to view the movies using IE? If so, which version of IE do you have?

Let's try this.

Go to the following page in IE 9. (It has embedded quicktime movies, and should provoke IE to ask you about the Active X control.)

http://www.apple.com/ipad/

Down the bottom of the screen you should see a box saying that something wants to run or be installed. (It's been a while since I've seen the box in IE 9 on my system so I can't recall the precise wording.) Click the option that lets the thing run or be installed. Does the video play now?

I have been waiting for this subject to reappear, and hope that I have not jumped in too early.

I don't want to interfere in any way as it looks as if this new approach may produce results.

I posted on a similar problem on 16th May 2011.

My problem was: could not view Quicktime videos from within ITunes.

could not open Quicktime from it's own Icon,

The problem back then was overcome by setting both Quicktime and ITunes to Run as Administrator.

On 16-05-2011, I reported that the problem had "gone away", either after a registry cleanup or an automatic update from Windows or Apple ITunes. I never found the answer, but there has been no further need to Run as Aministrator.

Since those days I have changed the laptop to a Windows 7 home premium, 64bit, It's much faster.

The problem has never reappeared, either on the old laptop or the new laptop.

I'll follow the discussion with interest. Hope it continues.

Hmm, INTERESTING.

I have tried to view Quicktime movies from the Apple website above mentioned, and get the same message:- Download Quicktime, and a box appears asking permission to allow an add-on. It's not clear what the add-on is, whether it wants to install Quicktime or an active x add-on.

I have not tried this.

It pays to read Apple discussion posts very, very carefully.

Looks as if I will have to join the club.

Waiting for developments.

Further comment. Windows 7 allows you to store a complete system image to an external hard drive, which may be useful in cases like this.

Hi again. I know there's now a few people watching this post and I've also been talking to a techy mate of mine too. Unfortunately the above 'solve' isn't any use to me as no 'box' appears asking for permissions/add-ons etc. So I don't get the option to fix/add anything at this stage.
I also had a look at 'add-ons' in IE9 tools and found nothing there untoward. Also looked in IE9 tools/safety/ActiveX Filtering; with this I tried both options of ticked and unticked but again no difference on the Apple site's appearance.
I then downloaded Google Chrome. With this the Apple site works properly and I can see all of the videos without having to alter anything so, that would say to me that it's definitely a problem with a setting in IE9 (though I'm no expert).

I know some of you will be saying 'just stick with Chrome then' but I've found it a bit jittery and slower than IE9 so I would rather stick with IE9. So really it's just a case of solving this little problem with the Apple site.
With any other site it probably wouldn't bother me but as I'm going to buy an iPad this week and use this laptop as its backup I would prefer the site to work as it may affect stuff I want to do in future once I have the iPad.

Any further help from you guys or anyone else would be great.

Thanks.

Just received an e-mail (via Apple Support Communities) on my mobile (not an IPhone). I don't how it came through as I had not ticked any boxes to ask for e-mail notifications. Go ahead and buy the Apple IPad. There are good reports about it in my location.

Hope to pursue the problem with IE9 though.

Watch this space - I think.

Thanks and yes the iPad is a definite. On searching tonight for accessories for the upcoming iPad I've found that any site (such as Targus) using Quicktime on their site have the same problem for me in IE9 so its definitely a quicktime/IE9 settings problem. For ease I've just decided to use Chrome in the meantime.

Download Quicktime, and a box appears asking permission to allow an add-on. It's not clear what the add-on is, whether it wants to install Quicktime or an active x add-on.

That sounds about right ... is that down in the location on the screen where the box appears in IE saying "Your last session ended unexpectedly ... do you want to restore session" (or words to that effect), if the PC has shut down unexpectedly while IE was open, for example?

Yes all is ok, I have just tried this on my Windows 7 laptop, having created a manual restore point first.

The message read "IE WANTS TO RUN THE FOLLOWING ADD-ON FROM APPLE INC". A little ambiguous perhaps, and even more confusing when the Apple screen tells you to download Quicktime.

Just "Allow" and the video plays. So there's no problem for me.

scm2210 still has a problem, though.

It could just a security setting on his IE9 which needs changing. I'll take a look at the security options, if you no longer have access to IE9.

Thanks

I know the box everyone is talking about as I've seen it on many occasions on other sites but for whatever reason it doesn't appear on the Apple site when I click to play videos (I've also found in recent days that other sites using Quicktime have the same problem on my machine). So without the box I can't 'allow' or 'add' or do anything else.

In order to obtain more details, can you do this?

Shut down your computer and restart.

Open up IE9 to your homepage and go to Tools>manage add-ons.

Set the display to all add-ons.

What Apple plugins are shown in the list?

Can you supply this information?

Close the tools panel.

Try to open a quicktime file from B Noir's link, but don't download quicktime if asked.

go to tools>manage add-ons

Set the display to currently loaded add-ons.

Tip:- You may wish to set a manual system restore point first - it proved useful for me in the end, as it gave me an understanding about what is going on in a correctly working system. I can explain later.

I'll have to have a think.

Looks like IE9 is blocking download of some third party extensions.

I'm not climbing on B Noir's shoulders, I have been retired almost 10 years, so these things keep me busy.

At least you have Google Chrome. Have you used Safari? - because that is what you will get on the iPad.

The problem here is that BT are going fibre optic which is creating local disruption, and I'm off to sort out a friend's modem.

Other work includes voluntary assistance for the elderly and their computers. It's surprising how well their computers are maintained, with all the automatic updates. There's a lesson to be learned, somewhere.
