Here is my question to the forum:
Can the 4S Camera with a good application (Like Camera+) substitute, when traveling, a Digital Camera? Assuming that you have a good video camera.

While the iPhone 4S has a good camera, it's still a cellphone camera after all. If you want truly excellent photos, then bring a dedicated digital camera.

There's a reason serious photographers spend $thousands on cameras. The iPhone is good for a cell phone camera, but the lens and sensor are too small for truly high quality photos, and it has no optical zoom. (Digital zoom is a hoax; it's really just cropping the photo before it is taken.)
Yep, I see a pretty substantial difference on a high resolution monitor. And the comparison is done under good lighting conditions. There will be a much more noticeable difference under low light conditions.
Differences will be much more obvious on still photos.
Sure, it's a phone. I think it's very good for everyday use.
The iPhone is good for the majority of people wanting
just quick snapshots for keepsakes, but is no substitute
for a dedicated camera.
Highend point and shoots (personally have a Canon SX40HS
I use as a "walkabout") are much better than any cell camera
can be. Digital SLRs are even better.
Need to remember that the quality of a camera in a phone has
to be a trade-off because it makes up only a portion of the
phone cost with other items that make up the phone.

I love it and I am a professional photographer...but yes it is limited as stated above.
But taken in context as just a phone with a camera it's good. Better than a lot of compact cameras.
