I just had a new hard drive installed on my Macbook Pro, which is currently named "Untitled" - I'm trying to rename it but keep getting the error "The name xxx can't be used, try using a name with fewer characters, or with no punctuation marks" even if I just type a single letter. Any tips?

Open the Info window for the volume and temporarily change the owner to yourself. You'll need to click the lock icon and authenticate before you can do this. After renaming the volume, change the owner back to "system".
I opened up the info window and both my account as well as 'system' had read and write privileges - I'm assuming that is what you mean by owner. I changed those privileges to just me but still wasn't able to rename the volume so I guess that's not the problem, but thanks for the tip.
If you click on the HDD icon name, on your desk top, you can edit it to your personal preference.

I was assuming that you had already formatted the drive. If you haven't, you'll be able to give it a name when you do that.
