Need help figuring out crash report please!

Hi there,

So, lately I have been playing Diablo 3 and found out that it has been running slow (FPS wise) so I switched over my graphics card to the NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT.

Everytime I run the game, randomly my computer will full on crash the sound will freeze and repeat it's self and no buttons work except a hard shut down.

Once I reboot, this is the crash report I get:

Check for a update for VMWare Fusion don't run that during a game

Uninstall McAfee it's unnecessary and problematic, use ClamXav as it a run as you need it anti-virus/scanner.

What ManyCamDriver is I don't know, but uninstall it using the developers uninstaller and or check for a update.

Reboot and all should be better I highly suspect.

If not you can perform a #8, but it's going to disable VMFusion and you'll have to reinstall it again.

Nope, it happened again about 2 minutes into playing Diablo 3, personally it feels like it is overheating, I feel as if the bottom of the Macbook is getting really hot very quickly.

Here is the updated crash report:

P.S. I have uninstalled VMWare, but it still appears in the crash report... not sure what else to do I cannot find anything about VMWare under the Computer search.

So after poking around a bit and checking temperature gauges while I was playing this is the results I had:

This is in celsius by the way.

CPU: 40 degrees up to 99 degrees

GPU: 32 degrees and then laptop froze at 80 degrees

I played for approximitly 2-3 minutes and it increased rapidly before crashing.

Is this likely to be the cause of the crashing?

Thanks,

~Mike

Run the #6 Hardware Check, you might have a faulty fan or sensor.

Games usually tax a machine, however it's supposed to throttle down and increase the fan speeds so it don't overheat.

So I'm suspecting a problem with OS X perhaps, why the #8 and the other checks, see if it runs fine in another user account. #16.

The 9400M is substancially below the minimum requirements for that game.

The 9600M is barely above the minimum requirements for that game

Ideally for that game you need a video card at least twice as powerful as the 9600M.

You have to turn the graphics settings way down.

Do all you can in trying to fix software, but there is som glaring facts.

Your machine is over 4 years old, it's at it's end of life stage, likely clogged with dust blocking the video exhaust port.

You might want to consider not running intense games on it and coast on it for as long as she lasts.

Games have a problem, they push the hardware and you either can't or can't get, video card upgrades for Mac's.

This chart here should explain your best option, a 3D Win 7 gaming tower which the OS lasts 10 years, there are plenty of games and you can upgrade the hardware.

I'm running a MacBookPro5,1 as well and have been having the exact same issue with full system hangup/crashes when running games, photoshop, videos, etc. Basically anything graphic intensive, especially if I run it on an external monitor, will eventually cause a crash. I agree that I believe it is related to over heating (SMCFan Control does help to force the system to power up the fans faster. Additionally, if I run a big external fan on the system, it reduces the number of crashes by about 90%).

But the one big piece of information I can add is that these crashes began occuring only _after_ the February firmware update for the graphics card. This update took the system to these versions:

Boot ROM Version:MBP51.007E.B06
SMC Version (system):1.33f8

This update did successfully fix the flicker problem on the 9400, as advertized, but the crashes also began, but only when running on the NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT. I ran many different games, including Diablo 3 Beta, on my system before this firmware update and never had any issues with crashing.

Unless I am mistaken, the Apple website says that there is no way to downgrade a firmware update (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2213), so I am at a loss for how to resolve this issue myself. If you have any other suggestions, knowing that this firmware update is the specific issue, they would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for any additional thoughts!
