Cannot setup ATV (2nd gen) with ethernet cable? No physical remote and the app won't sync?

I lost the physical remote that came with it. Also, the app is no good because I can't setup my Apple TV to sync with my wifi. I do currently have it connected to the internet via ethernet cable, yet, the remote app still won't work once at the "select a language" screen. What can I do? Buying a new remote is my last-resort.

I can't get to that screen, though, to set that up. Before I found out about that method, I reset my ATV to factory settings. Once it finally booted up again, my remote app could not sync with my ATV (still connected to ethernet cable).
