I have an app that I can't delete -- it is not an apple app. The message said it was in the trash, so I moved it back to my desktop (it's a zip file) and I want it off of my app folder and I can't delete it.

A zip file is not an application. I'm getting the idea that you can't delete something, but I'm not sure what it is or what happens when you try to delete it. If there's an error message, I need to know what it is. Post a screenshot if you prefer.
I have an app in my Launchpad called "AppCleaner"......I must have downloaded it, but don't remember. I found it in finder & moved it to the trash, however, when I try to move it to trash from Launchpad it won't delete the app. Like I said, I moved it from the trash to the desktop (zip file) thinking I could then delete the app in Launchpad -- still can't. Also, I don't know how to take a screenshot with a Mac.
You can't delete an application via LaunchPad unless it was download from the App Store, which this one wasn't. Delete it in the Finder, after making sure that it's not running. It should then disappear from LaunchPad.
OK, it has been removed from finder, but still in Launchpad. I opened Finder & did a search and nothing showed up ~~ maybe one day it will disappear from Launchpad. Thanks for your help.
Open Terminal and type the following:
sqlite3 ~/Library/Application\ Support/Dock/*.db "DELETE from apps WHERE title='APP_NAME';" && killall Dock
Replace APP_NAME with the full name of the application.
What & where do I find "terminal"?

You find Terminal in Utilities but if you are not comfortable with it, you should follow Linc's advice.

How did you remove it? If it is still in the trash, or on your desktop, it will still show up in Launchpad.
Thanks everyone -- not sure what I did, but it magically disappeared from Launchpad!!
That's the way it's supposed to work. I don't use Launchpad, because I think it's ridiculous, so I can't say how long it takes to recognize that an app has been deleted.
Under normal circumstances, it disappears as soon as the app is actually deleted from the trash.
I stumbled by accident on the answer: Go to Applications and find the icon and drag to trash. For some reason it will not trash from launch pad, but will from Application window.
