Hello, I want to create an outline in Pages, and I am not sure how. What I want to create is an outline where the numbers format themselves as I am tying. I used one in MS Word a long time, and since I am chanign over to Pages, I want to be able to do the same thing.

Have you looked at the Harvard Outline in the Template Chooser?

I have. I must not be working it correctly becasue it does not do what I want.

I am sorry for not being clear.
I want the letters or numbers to move as I hit the tab button. I want the numbers and letter to increase or decrease as I move form line to line and hit the tab button.

That is exactly what happens if you have a List Style selected for the text.
A tab demotes a line in the list to the next level down, shift tab promotes the line up one level.
opt tab will move the line a real tab.
Keep in mind that your List option has to have a next level down though for you to be able to get it.
That is set in Inspector > Text > List > Indent Level
