Sound from the USB ports on my Mac Pro (Early 2009) fail after a couple of seconds. Sound can still be heard from the Internal Speakers. I have replaced the USB speakers with several types and brands. Problem remains. I can get sound for several second then it quits and can not be restarted.

Thanks, the system has not been powered down and rebooted in over a year! I guess that the small price we pay for not running windows.

A year? Your profile says 10.7.4. Didn't those updates require reboot? I ask out of curiosity because I still use 10.6.5.
Reboot yes but not power down. According to the ref you linked for smc one option was full power down. That was the trick
