Hi all. I took my iphone into the Perth Apple care store today and they suggested as my cpu was running a bit slow, to go home a do a forced update via restoring it. It was fully backed up so i know my stuff is still there except half way through installing the (something 1.06?? maybe) it said failed. Now I have the USB image on my iphone 4 and no matter how many times I hold the sleep/wake button and the home button simultaneously will restor it. I have tried every maner of rebootign the computer, plugged in, not plugged in etc etc. I am home alone, with two kids and NO PHONE! im getting stressed, if anyone has any advice I would really apreciate it!

HELP!!

I have tried all of below, quite sucessfully until I get to part ten where it says to right click on the iphone and select update driver! I simply dont get that option!! please somebody!

THANKS TO THE ABOVE!!! IT FIXED my DELL / 64bit Win 7 Problem! Here's a MORE DETAILED SUMMARY of the above to hopefully make things more clear:

---------------------

OK-
this is a re-written compilation of fixes from various folks (@cdnfs, @codyc3)
which hopefully will be easy to fix your iPhone sync step-by-step.

My new DELL P55 / Win 7 FINALLY recognizes my iPhone and SYNCS!

I will try to summarize the steps:

1) DOWNLOAD (don't run directly) iTunes64Setup.exe from iTunes website.
Make sure you know where you saved this file.
Double click it, and install iTunes.
Install latest iTunes (assuming 64-bit)

2) Plug in iPhone.
Make sure computer recognizes the iPhone.
In Win7, go to Device Manager (under Control panel / Hardware), and go to the "Portable Devices" section. Apple iPhone should be listed. We will come back to this step later.

3) Download Universal Extractor from this site:
http://www.filehippo.com/downloaduniversalextractor/ (or search for this file. I tried using Less MSIables, but didn't work)

4) Install Universal extractor program and run program.

5) Select iTunesSetup.exe file to extract, and choose a Destination Directory.
Click ok, and choose "Not an installshield install", and it should extract this file.

6) Within this folder, find "AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi".

7) Go back to Universal Extractor program, and now extract AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi to a destination directory of your choice.

8) Click ok, and Choose MSI Administrative Installer method, then click OK.

9) A new FOLDER called "AppleMobile DeviceSupport64" should be created.
Within this, goto Common Files/Apple/Mobile Device Support/Drivers
to find files called "usbaapl64.inf" as well as 3 other files.
REMEMBER THIS LOCATION.

10) Go BACK to STEP #2 and within the Device Manager, RIGHT CLICK on Apple iPhone and select "Update Software Driver".

11) Choose Browse My Computer for driver Software.

12) Browse to the "Drivers" folder in step #9 where usbaapl64.inf is located and choose this folder.

VOILA! Your iPhone drivers are now CORRECTLY INSTALLED!!!!!!!

HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE as it FINALLY FIXED THE PROBLEM!!!!

Disable all firewalls & anti-virus software, if you are running any, then see if yopu can force the phone into recovery mode & restore it:

Turn your phone off. Leave the USB cable connected to your computer, but NOT your phone, iTunes running, press & hold the home button while connecting the USB cable to your dock connector, continue holding the home button until you see “Connect to iTunes” on the screen. You may now release the home button. iTunes should now display that it has detected your phone in recovery mode, if not quit and reopen iTunes. If you still don’t see the recovery message repeat these steps again. iTunes will give you the option to restore from a backup or set up as new.

Try DFU mode. If this doesn't work, you'll have to make an appointment at an Apple store:

1. Close iTunes.

2. Connect your iPhone to your computer and then launch iTunes.

3. Turn your iPhone off (hold down the power button at the top of the iPhone).

4. Then, hold down the sleep/wake button and home button together for EXACTLY 10 SECONDS, then release the sleep/wake button.

5. Continue to hold down the Home button until a message appears in iTunes telling you an iPhone in recover mode has been detected. When you are in DFU mode your iPhone screen will be completely black. Remember that if you see the restore logo, iTunes logo, or any message on the iPhone screen, you are not in DFU mode but standard Recovery Mode.

6. Hit the OK message that should popup to restore your phone.
