Delete preinstalled apps

You can but the applications are not HDD space hogs. I would suggest replacing the internal HDD with a larger one or getting and external HDD and put your larger files on that.

If Safari literally doesn't work at all, you have major problems that won't be solved by deleting applications.

As Linc Davis say you have serious problems with your Mac. The way you planning to go will in all likelihood make matter worse rather then better.

You might want to start by repair your disk drive with Disk Utilities.

You can use the terminal but beware of pain if you make a mistake. I would advise making a bootable clone backup first on an external USB drive before trying this method. Remember backups are like revenge, you can't have enough until you have too much. (I always have two backups just in case)

Here is a method that was posted somewhere and has worked for me.

Launch terminal and at prompt enter:

sudo rm -rf followed by a space.

Then drag to the terminal window the application to delete.

( sudo rm -rf /applications/xxx.app.) Press return and enter Admin pw.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:

1. Be sure your Mac is shut down.
2. Press the power button.
3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).

*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?

After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

I would suggest that you remove Norton AV. So far I have only heard bad things about it.

When asked to help others with problems on their Mac and I discover Norton AV installed, my first step it to remove it before doing anything else. That step alone helps most of the time. Besides it doesn't really do anything go on a Mac anyway.

As for erasing preinstalled apps, I strongly suggest you spare at least Safari's life. It being the default browser, its code is involved in many internal functions too. Somethink akin to erasing MS Internet Explorer in a Windows computer and then expecting all to be peachy. These others you mention (GarageBand, iPhoto, iMovie, iWeb) form the iLife product and were included for free; if you delete them and need/want them later on, may not be able to recover since Apple seems to be discontinuing the product. iDVD, if present, is quite a rarity and many people would near murder to get it; it is the only way to burn a movie DVD without additional investment.

Alan, what do you do for an Ati-virus program? I lost a PC big time once from a Virus.

A Mac isn't a PC. There is malware for the Mac, but not much of it, and it's all easy to avoid and easy to remove. See my Mac Malware Guide.

My suggestion was to remove Norton and see what happens.

If you feel that you must have a AV program, I would suggest ClamXav. It is safe.

Along those lines, if by any chance it has MacKeeper, that is one big POS you need to remove.

The reason for this is almost certainly that you have disabled JavaScript in Safari Preferences. You need JavaScript which is much different from Java which you probably don't need and should have disabled.
